Bird netting & exclusion

From a 5 mm wildlife-safe diamond to 40 mm commercial exclusion

Bird netting is the simplest form of crop insurance: a physical barrier that keeps birds off fruit, feed and structures without harming them. The specification is decided by the bird, the structure and how long the net stays up.

Our range covers lightweight diamond mesh for home gardens and small blocks, X-weave 40 and 60 g/m² for orchard canopies, knotted 19 mm 6-ply and 9-ply HDPE for commercial and industrial exclusion, 40 mm 12-ply for pigeons and gulls, and fire-retardant knotted net for warehouses and atriums. Aviary mesh and by-the-metre repair netting complete the line.

Every roll is HALS stabilised and available in black, white or grey. Black is the least visible against foliage; white is more visible to birds and reduces collision risk in open structures.

Installation

Three configurations that work

Bird netting protecting cherry trees from birdsDraped tree net
Bird netting stretched over orchard rows on farmlandOverhead canopy
Black bird protection netting for orchards and fruit treesRoll stock

Overhead canopy

Posts at 8–10 m, perimeter wire, net laid over and tensioned with a rope border. The standard for commercial orchards: machinery passes underneath, net stays up for the season.

Draped side net

Net thrown over the tree or row and tied at the base. Cheaper and faster for small blocks, but slower at harvest and harder to mechanise.

Structure exclusion

Warehouses, atriums and hangars are sealed at openings and roof voids with knotted net on cable grids. Fire-retardant net is normally mandatory here — check local building codes.

Getting the tension right

A net that flaps wears at the eyelets and scares birds into it. Tension to the point where the net does not move in a light breeze, and leave a 5% allowance on very long spans.

FAQ

Ciflower Bird Netting Range questions buyers ask

What mesh size keeps sparrows out, and what keeps pigeons out?

Sparrows and small finches need 19 mm mesh or finer; pigeons and seagulls need 40–50 mm because they are larger and push rather than squeeze. A 19 mm 6-ply knotted net is the general-purpose crop specification; 40 mm 12-ply is the warehouse and structure specification.

Is bird netting safe for wildlife?

Ours is. We supply a 5 mm diamond wildlife-safe net that is soft and highly visible, and we recommend black or white rather than clear for any net where birds may fly into it. Mesh should be tensioned so birds bounce rather than tangle.

How do you fit netting over a mature orchard?

Either as a flat overhead canopy on posts and wires at 4–5 m, or as a draped side net closed at the headland. Overhead is easier to mechanise; draping is cheaper on small blocks and irregular shapes.

Will the net rub the fruit?

Not if it is tensioned clear of the canopy. Net resting on branches causes rub marks and gives birds a perch. Keep 30–50 cm between net and fruit.

How long does HDPE bird net last?

HALS-stabilised HDPE gives 5–8 years in temperate climates and 4–6 years in high-UV regions. Knotted 6-ply commercial net lasts longer than lightweight diamond net because the strand is thicker.

Can you supply net by the metre?

Yes — 19 mm 9-ply square mesh and stainless-reinforced netting are both sold by the metre, which suits repairs and small structures.

Do you make custom sizes?

Yes. We cut and sew to your dimensions with a rope border, eyelets or a reinforced hem. Send the frame dimensions and we will add the fixing allowance.

What is the price?

Reference FOB China: diamond mesh from USD 17 per roll, X-weave 40 g/m² USD 59 per 10 × 5 m, knotted 19 mm 6-ply USD 232 per 10 × 100 m, large 40 mm mesh USD 84 per 25 × 25 m.
